What supports tooth enamel?

Building Blocks of Tooth Enamel: The Whys and Hows.

As Julian, I've journeyed through different phases of my life, from listening to my mum, stressing about the importance of proper oral hygiene to cracking a tooth during a rather unforgettable rugby match in my early years. These experiences surely do emphasize one thing - just how important tooth enamel truly is!

Dentistry always seemed like an alien planet to me with the possibility of alienlike experiences. But hey, turns out even the aliens speak English! So, let's break it down. Just like the body relies on the skeletal system, your teeth have their own armor - tooth enamel. Have you ever wondered, what exactly supports this dynamic duo known as tooth enamel?

Friendly Food: The Nutrition Powerhouse

First things first, we all know the age-old saying, "You are what you eat!" Tooth enamel is primarily composed of minerals, with the heavyweights being calcium and phosphorus. Consuming a diet rich in these two elements, along with a friendly punch of vitamin D to help with absorption, protects and nourishes your enamel.

So, where does one nab these nutritional ninjas? Well, the usual suspects include milk, cheese, and other dairy products for calcium. Did you know that kiwi, a.k.a the under-rated fruit superhero, is a sensational source of calcium too? On the phosphorus front, seafood, whole grains, and nuts take the lead. And yes, before you ask, our beloved Sun is a free and fun source of vitamin D!

The Daily Drill: Oral Hygiene to the Rescue

There were times when in my zealous preparation for an outing, I would neglect my teeth brushing ritual. Big mistake! The day would continue with a sense of something amiss, almost like leaving home without a phone in today's world.

Brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups provide a safety net for your beloved tooth enamel, preventing unsolicited invasions by bacteria and plaque. Oh, and don't forget the fluoridated toothpaste; it's an enamel's best friend!

As much as I love my coffee, I've come to the reluctant realization that it doesn't love my teeth as much. Acidic and sugary food or drinks, I am looking at you too, tend to strip away the enamel, leaving the teeth more vulnerable. Moderation, my friends, is the name of the game here or else face the wrath of the dentist's drill!

Salivary Savior: Nature’s Own Superhero

Saliva, often underappreciated, does an excellent job at maintaining our oral hygiene. Your mouth's in-house cleaning service, it neutralizes acids and bathes the teeth with essential minerals, thus, supporting enamel protection. Think of it as your teeth's unsung superhero, continuously working behind the scenes, dousing bacterial fires, and recoating your teeth with fortifying minerals.

The question then arises, how does one maintain the superhero status of saliva? Well, it's quite simple really. Drink plenty of water, chew sugar-free gum, especially after meals, and avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol that can lead to dry mouth and disturb our superhero's functioning.

Enamel Enigma: Know When to Say When

The unfortunate part is our super-strong enamel comes with no backup from call centers. Once it's worn down, it does not regrow. Therefore, recognizing early signs of enamel erosion is as vital as knowing when to let your mates win a game of poker (hint: it's when they host).

Watch out for sensitivity to hot or cold, textural changes in your teeth (rough edges, anyone?), discoloration, and cracks or chips. Much like a car's check engine light, these are your mouth's way of warning you that something is amiss!

In the game of maintaining strong enamel, knowledge is power. Stick to a nutrition-rich diet, maintain proper oral hygiene habits, recognize the power of saliva and keep an eye out for any warning signs of enamel erosion. Just like I did after the unfortunate rugby incident, understand the importance of treating your enamel with the respect it deserves!

Remember, your tooth enamel is an unsung hero of your mouth, maintaining it makes you the superhero of your oral health. So the next time you flash that dazzling smile, know that you are not just dazzling but also sending a loud and clear message - you care for your tooth enamel.
